Do It Yourself ( D-I-Y ) Dog Agility Equipment Plans

Free Standing Competition Jump

Introduction

These Plans are for a Dog Agility Free Standing Competition Jump that meets both AKC and USDAA specifications. The Uprights are constructed from 1.25” ( I.D. ) PVC pipe and the Jump Bars from 1.0” ( I.D. ) PVC pipe.
Follow these plans and your completed Jump will look similar to the Agility Gear Free Standing Competition Jump pictured above.

Tools Required

Minimal:

1. A PVC cutting tool ( please refer to Cutting PVC under the D-I-Y Equipment Tips on this website )

2. A phillips screwdriver

Materials Required

From your local Building Supply Store:

1. Two 10 foot lengths of 1.25” schedule 40 PVC Pipe ( 20 feet ) and one 10 foot length of 1.0” schedule 40 PVC Pipe.

2. Additionally, if you decide ( optional ) to:

o Remove the labels from the PVC, you will need to purchase acetone

o Glue ( cement ) the Jump, you will need to purchase PVC cement

From AgilityGear.com:

The following items are typically not sold at a Building Supply Store, or the store often does not stock sufficient quantities to meet your requirements.

1. Two 1.25” 5 Way PVC Connectors

2. Ten 1.25” PVC End Caps ( End caps are theoretically available at your Building Supply Store, but often only in limited quantities ).

3. Two Jump Cup Strips

4. Colored Vinyl tape to decorate your Jump ( stay away from Duct tape, it rapidly deteriorates in the sun and peels )

The above four items can be purchased on this website. Please refer to the PVC Fittings and Jump Cups and Misc Agility product categories. Alternatively, you can purchase an Agility Gear Free Standing Competition Jump Kit.

Clean Your PVC

If you decide to clean your PVC Pipe and Fittings, it is recommended that you do it at this point ( please refer to Cleaning PVC under the D-I-Y Equipment Tips on this website ).

Assembly – Phase 1:

During this phase of the assembly process, you can glue or simply insert the PVC fittings ( end caps, connectors ) onto the PVC pipe as described below. You will need to press firmly to make sure the PVC pipe seats into the fitting.

1. Insert / glue one End Cap to each of the two Uprights
2. Insert / glue one 5 Way Connector onto the opposite end of the Uprights
3. Mount one Jump Cup Strip to each of the Uprights. Instructions are included on the Jump Cup Strip Package. However, make sure you align the Strips so they will face inward when the Jump is fully assembled ( See the photo at the beginning of this webpage ).

4. Insert / glue one End Cap to each of the eight Feet

5. Decorate your Jump Bars and Uprights with vinyl tape
At this point your Jump should appear as shown in the Photo below:
1. Two Uprights with Jump Cup Strips and PVC Connectors attached
2. Eight Feet ( approximately 8 inches in length )
3. Two Jump Bars ( striped / taped )

Final Assembly – Phase II:

To aid in storage and transport, we do not recommend gluing your PVC in this Phase. Rather you may want to coat the inside of the fittings with a non-toxic Vaseline type product to ease assembly and disassembly.

1. Insert and press the PVC Feet into their respective fittings as shown in the photo at the beginning of this webpage. Again press firmly to make sure the Feet seat into the fittings.

2. Set the Jump Bars to the proper height on the Jump Cup Strips.

“You’re Good to Go”.

Have fun!
